RSS and The Irish Wheelchair Association

The Irish Wheelchair Association is a charitable organisation whose operations are only possible through funding, fund raising and the involvement of programmes like the RSS.

The community centre provides essential day services to its members and also acts as a much needed social space for those with physical disabilities throughout county Sligo to meet each other.

Michael is a participant on the RSS. As a reduced income farmer from South Sligo, Michael joined the RSS back in 2005. He has the benefit of also being a fully trained bus driver.

On the success of his application Michael met with one of County Sligo LEADER Partnership’s RSS team members. At this meeting Michael’s interests and skill set were discussed. On the back of this meeting it was decided to place Michael with the Irish Wheelchair Association.

Michael’s day to day role involves transporting those with physical disabilities from their homes to the Irish Wheelchair Association community centre in Sligo town, and back home again.

Without the constant commitment from people like Michael and the Rural Social Scheme, community centres like the Irish Wheelchair Association could not operate
