Ballisodare astro pitch and Sports complex are located in Young’s Quarry in Ballisodare. These facilities consist of an all weather synthetic playing pitch with perimeter walking track and flood lighting and a community building with a multi-purpose purpose sports hall, meeting rooms and storage areas.
The facilities are operated by Ballisodare United AFC and Ballisodare Sports Complex CLG and are provided for the use by all local and surrounding community groups engaging in activities that promote improving physical, mental health and wellbeing of all age groups living in the wide catchment area. The population served by these facilities is approximately 1700.
Both promoters have a broad community focus and have been in been involved in developing wider community projects/events in the area over the years, from family fun days, sports camps and recently a recreational cycling and walking trail on Coillte lands between Collooney and Ballisodare, developed in conjunction with Sligo County Council and Ballisodare Community Council.
These projects are inclusive to all the people in the community from Youth, Men’s Shed, New Communities who have made Ballisodare their new home to Older Persons.
The walking facility will also open up the adjacent Union Woods walking trails and routes to greater all year-round use. This track, which is at the access point to the Union Wood trails, will cater to this need.
The Ballisodare community also benefits from the assistance of participants on the TÚS programme who support the community in the maintenance of these facilities, administration support and helping work on Tidy Towns.
Ballisodare Astro Pitch was awarded €200,000 of LEADER aid and Ballisodare Sports Complex was awarded €138,058 of LEADER Aid.
