Wild West Sailing

Wild West Sailing is the brainchild of David O’Connor who applied for LEADER support towards this start-up sailing business. Wild West Sailing offers a range of sailing experiences such as Day sailing with guided tours for groups, working with Mental Health and Addiction Recovery Centres and organisations, corporate sail training and charter voyages.

Wild West Sailing was also the trainer on another LEADER-funded initiative called Fair Winds sail training which was a pilot project to establish a sail training course for young Sligo people on Lough Gill.

The purpose of the training was to build the capacity of the young participants and build their teamwork ability through the medium of sailing. The key tenets of the training programme were:

Self Discovery: We can do more than we expect of ourselves.

Collaboration and Competition: Value friendship, trust and teamwork.

Diversity and Inclusion: Ideas, creativity ability and respect for others helps us to accept ourselves.

Resilience: Success and failure are both important to build confidence.

The Natural World: Forces greater than ourselves guide us.

The pilot project was delivered to 80 young people in two phases in Autumn 2018 and Spring 2019.
